Politicizing LGBTQIA Issues to Push Anti-China Propaganda

When tech vlogger Naomi Wu stepped away from social media in July 2023, many anti-China propagandists saw an opportunity.

On 7 July 2023 tech vlogger Naomi Wu posted to her Twitter account with a cryptic tweet announcing that she would be stepping away from social media and keeping a low profile, suggesting she may have been coerced into doing so.

By whom she didn’t say, but a number of anti-China propagandists have taken advantage of the situation to accuse the Chinese government of silencing her.¹² Trans streamer and activist Keffals last week went live on her YouTube channel joining in the accusations.

Because Ms. Wu’s girlfriend is Uyghur, the propagandists have taken the opportunity to push the false narrative of Chinese genocide against Uyghur Muslims in spite of there being no evidence to support the claims by Western imperialists.³⁴⁵

But the truth isn’t important to anti-communist, anti-China imperialists. What’s important to them is pushing their narrative while using the alleged disappearance of a prominent LGBTQIA vlogger, inventor, and tech reviewer to do it. It’s dishonest and utterly shameful.

Prior to stepping away from social media, Ms. Wu had been outed as a lesbian by the online publication Vice, which violated a pre-interview agreement not to discuss her personal life or sexual orientation. Outraged by the experience, she then posted a video to YouTube in which she sharply criticized the publication, citing the potential for legal ramifications for herself and her girlfriend.

China has a mixed record on LGBTQIA rights.⁶⁷ Homosexuality has been legal there since 1997 and same-sex couples enjoy privileges similar to civil unions in the West, but marriage is still prohibited, as are depictions in film and television of homosexual behavior such as kissing and holding hands. Knowing this, anti-communist propagandists nevertheless single China (and Russia) out for criticism, ignoring crackdowns in Africa, Europe, and especially Nazi-controlled Ukraine. But those nations are already firmly under U.S. dominance, so nobody in Western LGBTQIA circles seems to mind as much. Such is imperial hypocrisy.

Given the rising tensions between the U.S. and its vassal states on one side and China, Russia, and nations within their geopolitical orbit on the other, it’s unlikely that antagonizing Beijing further with faux outrage will help Naomi Wu’s situation. What’s most appalling about this is that nobody presently feigning concern for Ms. Wu actually cares about her. To them she is simply the means to their end of promoting anti-China propaganda in the service of Western imperialism. While the U.S. degenerates into open fascism and continues to crack down on LGBTQIA rights at home, with hundreds of laws in dozens of states being brought up to erase queer folk from existence, they’re obsessed with doing the bidding of anti-LGBTQIA imperialists who only use the illusion of tolerance to gain support from the very marginalized communities they oppress.
